Eastern Bank Sponsors “The Quest for Immortality” Exhibit at the Museum of Science, Boston
All 5th grade students in Lynn, Malden, Quincy and Salem can attend for free

BOSTON, Mass., Nov. 18, 2002 – To celebrate its sponsorship of the The Quest for Immortality: Treasures of Ancient Egypt exhibition on display at the Museum of Science, Eastern Bank today announced that it will provide free exhibit passes for every 5th grade public school student in Lynn, Malden, Quincy and Salem.

New Kingdom Pharaoh Thutmose III – portrayed by actor Frank Ridley of the Boston History Collaborative – visited today with students at Shoemaker School in Lynn, Salemwood School in Malden, Montclair School in Quincy, and Saltonstall School in Salem. The pharaoh handed out invitations to the exhibit on papyrus scrolls, along with talking about his reign over Egypt and his civilization’s fascination with immortality.

In all, more than 3,000 students and teachers in Lynn, Malden, Quincy and Salem will now have the opportunity to visit the exhibit for free during school field trips. The schools have the option of using the passes for 4th grade students instead of 5th graders.

“Eastern is dedicated to serving Greater Boston communities, which is reflected in both our financial support of this exhibit and our decision to help students in these four cities attend,” said Joe Bartolotta, Eastern’s public relations director. “The museum deserves credit for working with us to make this happen.”

The Quest for Immortality exhibit opens Wednesday, November 20 at the Museum of Science and will show through March 30, 2003. It is the largest exhibit featuring artifacts on loan from the Egyptian Government to tour the United States, and the first such tour in 14 years. It is expected to draw 450,000 visitors to the museum before it closes on March 30.

“We’re pleased to host this unprecedented exhibit, said Linda M. Johnson, Vice President of Visitor Services and Community Relations. “ To complement the remarkable artifacts on display, the Museum of Science has added a new dimension to the Boston presentation by also investigating archaeologists’ quest to understand the ancient Egyptian culture. We hope students will be inspired by the science of archaeology featured in The Quest for Immortality.”

This is Eastern’s second partnership with the Museum of Science. Last winter, the bank sponsored The Lost Spacecraft: Liberty Bell 7 Recovered exhibit, which chronicled the early days of space exploration and recounted the incredible story of the 1961 launch, loss and recovery of the Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft.
