Peabody Essex Museum Receives $100,000 Gift From Eastern Bank Easterns donation will benefit Museums $125 million expansion SALEM, Mass., May 19, 2003 The Peabody Essex Museum announced today that it has received a $100,000 donation from the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation for its $125 million transformation. Easterns donation is the largest by a bank for the creation of the new Peabody Essex Museum, which opens to the public June 21. In recognition of the banks generosity, the museum will name the visitor services area nearby the new main entrance in honor of the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation. Eastern Banks gift demonstrates that it shares our commitment to art and culture, and to the success of downtown Salem, said Dan Monroe, Executive Director and CEO, Peabody Essex Museum. On behalf of the Museum, its trustees and staff, I would like to thank Eastern Bank for its generous gift. Funded by contributions from the bank, the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation donated $900,000 to non-profit organizations throughout Greater Boston in 2002. The Peabody Essex Museum donation is one of the largest ever made by the Foundation. It is impossible to overstate the Museums importance to downtown Salem, said Stanley J. Lukowski, Chairman and CEO, Eastern Bank. The North Shore and, in fact, all of New England is fortunate to have such an impressive collection of art, culture and history here in our own backyard. On June 21, the new Peabody Essex Museum will open its doors to the public, capping a $125 million transformation with a striking new building designed by architect Moshe Safdie, more than 250,000 square feet of new and renovated galleries and public spaces, a new park and garden, and a 200-year-old merchants house from China. In honor of the event, the museum, with support from the Eagle Tribune Publishing Co./Rogers Family Foundation, will host a weekend of free concerts, activities, and presentations to celebrate the rebirth of the 204-year old museum. Throughout the weekend, the Museum will be offering free admission to all of its galleries and historic homes. About the Peabody Essex Museum The Peabody Essex, one of New Englands largest museums, offers an extraordinary blend of art and culture. It houses renowned collections of American decorative art, folk art, portraits, costumes, and furniture; Native American art; Oceanic art; African art; maritime art, and art from China, Japan, Korea, and India. These exceptional collections are set amidst one of the nations premier ensembles of early American architecture, including 24 historic properties. The museum is currently in the final stages of a $125 million initiative that will result in 250,000 square feet of new and renovated facilities, with gallery installations representing the full range and scope of the Museums holdings for the first time in the institutions history. A striking new wing designed by Moshe Safdie will add several new galleries. The Phillips Library remains open, and public programs such as music, dance, and lectures will continue on a regular basis. Call (800) 745-1876, or visit their Web site at www.pem.org.
