Money aids victims of the September 11 attack

Boston, Mass., Nov. 1, 2001 – Eastern Bank, together with its customers and employees, have raised $300,000 to help the families who lost relatives in the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States.

Eastern employees and customers contributed $147,956 to the relief fund. The Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation matched the gifts dollar-for-dollar, bringing the total to $295,912. The Foundation then donated another $4,088, making the amount raised an even $300,000.

“I’m proud of the contributions made by customers and our employees,” said Nancy Stager, Eastern’s director of human resources, which oversaw the relief effort. “Like so many Americans, they rallied for our country and helped families who are in true need of assistance. It is wonderful to witness this outpouring of support in the aftermath of the September 11th tragedies.”

In addition to all the contributions from employees, the stories from our customers were especially heart-warming. One bank customer donated his entire $600 income tax rebate check. In neighborhoods from Marshfield to Peabody, children donated the money they made by selling lemonade and cookies. And 12 different school-related organizations raised money that was eventually donated to the relief fund.

Eastern Bank’s relief fund will be split evenly between the American Red Cross, the September 11 Fund, and the New York Police and Fire Widows’ and Children’s Benefit Fund.
