Eastern Bank Volunteers
With a culture rooted in community service, our community involvement extends beyond grant-making. Eastern Bank employees have donated over 50,000 hours to organizations and causes important to them - more time than any other company in the Greater Boston region.
That’s not because we mandate our employees to serve our communities. It is because it is part of our culture and our employees value the opportunity to serve.
Every year, hundreds of Eastern Bank employees and their families volunteer during our annual Celebration of Service, which runs from the National Day of Service and Remembrance on September 11 through Veterans Day on November 11.
In celebration of Eastern Bank's 200th anniversary, over half of Eastern Bank employees volunteered their time to complete a record breaking 211 events during the 2018 Celebration of Service. We provided hundreds of volunteers with a variety of dates, times and causes to fit schedules, ages and interests. Benefiting organizations included Cradles to Crayons, Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund, Project Citizenship, Rise Against Hunger and The Food Project.

Paying it Forward on Project Citizenship Day
On September 17, 2018, Eastern Bank colleagues volunteered at Citizenship Day, the biggest event of the year for non profit partner Project Citizenship, and one event in Eastern’s year long Celebration of Service. Project Citizenship’s mission is to educate immigrants about the benefits of citizenship, and to help eligible, legal permanent residents overcome barriers to naturalization.
Since 2011, the organization has assisted more than 18,000 immigrants from 152 countries of origin. Project Citizenship’s mission resonates with many Eastern Bank employees, including Abby Nguyen-Burke, who immigrated to the United States with her family from the Philippines.
“It’s just paying it back, by paying it forward for other immigrants,” said Abby.
Packaging meals with Rise Against Hunger®
At Eastern Bank we're committed to helping our communities prosper. And that means, making sure all members of our community, near and far, have access to a good meal. In 2018, Eastern Banker partnered with the organization Rise Against Hunger® to assist in their vision "of a world without hunger" by hosting 8 volunteer events. Volunteers teamed together in Rise Against Hunger's innovative meal packaging program. An assembly line system that combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables into meal packets that provide essential vitamins and minerals to those in need.
Rise Against Hunger® is on a mission to "end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable and creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources." Eastern Bank is committed to helping them in this mission.
Valuing our Veterans
Eastern deeply values and respects the sacrifices of our veterans and their families. We also believe that veterans—shaped by the service and sacrifice they make while serving our country—make great employees and great citizens.
Our Military Veterans and Families Network, which guides our involvement with the veteran community, is made up of 25 Eastern employees. We are passionate about supporting veterans and their families as they return to civilian life. In addition to our commitment to hiring and training military veterans, Eastern supports veterans through both philanthropic investments and advocacy. In 2018, we proudly partnered with Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund, to honor our veterans by creating a garden of flags on Boston Common for Memorial Day Weekend. Each flag represents a Massachusetts service member, since the Revolutionary War, who gave their life defending our country.
