Good in our communities

Although financial support is an essential part of our community involvement, we know that lending our voice as a strong advocate can also lead to positive change for our communities on issues that make sense for us to help. Eastern Bankers have testified on Beacon Hill on a variety of issues including support of social justice legislation. We have lead business campaigns and fostered conversations among businesses around social issues, and demonstrated our commitment through our own business practices.

Transgender Legislation

Eastern Bank testified before the Massachusetts House and Senate in support of the Transgender Public Accommodations Bill and led a coalition of more than 250 businesses in support of the legislation. As a result of our leadership and the efforts of others, the Massachusetts Governor signed a bill into law allowing transgender people to have access to, and be protected in, areas of public accommodation in accordance with their gender identity and banning discrimination in public accommodations based on gender identity.  We have also signed on to support similar legislation to protect the rights of Transgender people in New Hampshire.

Pay Equity

Eastern Bank testified before the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development on two bills to encourage pay equity and encouraging more women on boards of directors in Massachusetts.  We work tirelessly behind the scenes with the Attorney General, the Mayor of Boston's staff, and others.  Eastern is a leader in the Boston Women’s Workforce Council, the Center for Women In Business, and 2020 Women on Boards, supporting each group to gather and report data as the basis for positive change.

Massachusetts Race Amity Day

We worked with other businesses and organizations across the Bay State to advocate for an annual Massachusetts Race Amity Day. Those efforts paid off when Massachusetts became the first state to pass a resolution dedicating the second Sunday of June each year as a day to reflect upon the diverse cultural backgrounds of the people of Massachusetts and to build bridges of understanding across racial divides. A similar resolution was passed at the national level last year.

Support for Veterans

Through our partnerships with Massachusetts Fallen Heroes, Veterans Legal Service, the New England Center for Homeless Veterans we know that Veterans—formed by the service and sacrifice they make while serving our country—make great employees and great citizens.  We also know that our communities are strengthened when we all come together for the common good, and speak up to help those who need it.  Making the point, “Access to Veteran services should not depend on what zip code you live in,” Eastern testified in August 2016, to improve training and require certification for Veterans Service Officers in cities and towns across Massachusetts to improve access for Veterans to vital benefits that are already designed and funded to help them and their families.  We also made a $50,000 contribution to support UMass Lowell’s Veterans Fund, to enable zero percent loans to student-veterans facing financial crises that threaten their ability to complete their degree programs.

Eastern Bankers are out in our communities donating their time, talent, and treasure.  We can be found walking to fund cancer research, sorting food at a pantry, preparing a neighborhood garden, mentoring a student, or sharing our knowledge of financial literacy with ‘students’ of all ages.
