Eastern Bank names three distinguished leaders to its Board of Directors
Former U.S. Senator, incubator founder and marketing exec bolster Board’s expertise
BOSTON, April 1, 2014 – Eastern Bank, a full-service commercial bank headquartered in Boston, announced today that it has added three accomplished professionals to its Board of Directors.
Joining the Board at its April meeting will be: Joseph T. Chung, Managing Director and co-founder of Redstar Ventures; former U.S. Senator William M. “Mo” Cowan, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of ML Strategies; and Bari A. Harlam, Executive Vice President of Membership, Marketing, and Analytics at BJ's Wholesale Club.
“Eastern Bank is very pleased to add three talented and distinguished professionals to our Board of Directors,” said Chairman and CEO Richard E. Holbrook. “Their collective experience and diversity will further strengthen our board, leaving us well-positioned to better serve the people and businesses of New England.”
Chung co-founded Redstar Ventures, an incubator focused on building companies by identifying significant trends and growing markets. Prior to Redstar, he was co-founder and Chairman of Allurent and co-founder, Chairman and CTO of Art Technology Group (ATG). Chung led the growth of ATG from a two-person consultancy to a publicly traded enterprise software company with more than 1,200 employees and annual revenues exceeding $160 million. He holds BS and MS degrees in Computer Science from MIT and conducted his graduate work at the MIT Media Lab.
Senator Cowan manages operations for ML Strategies, the government relations and strategic consulting affiliate of the law firm Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky & Popeo, where he practiced law from 1997-2009 and is also “of counsel” at the firm. Prior to rejoining Mintz Levin, Senator Cowan represented the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as interim United States Senator, filling the vacancy created when John F. Kerry was appointed United States Secretary of State. Previously, he served as Chief Legal Counsel and Chief of Staff to Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. Senator Cowan earned his JD from Northeastern University and AB from Duke University.
Harlam oversees all membership, marketing, and analytics at BJ’s Wholesale Club. Prior to BJ’s, Harlam was Chief Marketing Officer of Swipely, a technology startup. She also served as Senior Vice President of Marketing at CVS Caremark, where she led the development and launch of the ExtraCare loyalty program. Her work has been published in a variety of journals including: Marketing Science, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, the International Journal of Research in Marketing, and the Journal of Business Research.
