Notice of Fraudulent Phone Calls and Text Messages
Eastern Bank has been made aware that customers, as well as non-customers, are receiving automated calls on their cell phones and landlines, as well as text messages, with the following general messages:
|Phone Call Message|
“This is a call from Eastern Bank. Your MasterCard account has been locked. Please press 1 now to unlock.”
The recording then instructs the individual to enter their debit card number. There may also be a variation of this phone call that references other banks or asks the customer to enter their debit card number in order to activate it. Please hang up and do not press 1.
“Your Eastern Bank Card has been locked.” Please call us at 1-888-317-3670.”
When you call the number it claims to be Eastern Bank’s 24 hour security department and asks you to press 1 to reactivate your debit card. Please do not call the phone number and just delete the text message.
Please be advised that this scam has been reported by the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office ( read the press release 1
) and these calls and text messages are not being made by Eastern Bank. This is a phishing attempt by criminals to obtain your personal account information. The criminals are calling telephone numbers and sending text messages randomly and do not know that you are an Eastern Bank customer. Never provide your debit card number or any other private information in response to an unsolicited phone call, email or text message.
