Eastern Bank Honors Cindy Horgan, Executive Director and Family Support Coordinator of Cape Cod Children’s Place, with Community Advocacy Award

October 31, 2019

Her Background in Family Work and Community Engagement Encourages the Healthy Development of Families and Children Throughout Cape Cod and the Islands

BOSTON, MA, October 31, 2019 – Eastern Bank, America’s oldest and largest mutual bank, has honored Cindy Horgan, Executive Director and Family Support Coordinator of Cape Cod Children’s Place, with a 2019 Community Advocacy Award. Cape Cod Children’s Place is a non-profit resource, referral, and education center committed to providing high-quality care, support, and community engagement for families with children on the lower and outer Cape. It is at the center of building a true community of caring to nurture, support, and empower local families.

Cindy joined Cape Cod Children’s Place as Executive Director in 2013 with responsibility for areas that include staffing, programming, and budgeting. Programs focus on building the skills, knowledge, and resources families need to ensure children grow up in healthy, nurturing, and safe environments. Cape Cod Children’s Place provides exceptional early childhood education and care programs to support the crucial early learning years and a child’s strong social and emotional development. Its support resources use a strength-based approach to assist families. It also partners with schools, libraries, and other local organizations to engage in strengthening their overall community.

Cindy leverages Cape Cod Children’s Place as a resource for community engagement and leadership. In 2017, she oversaw its expansion with the creation of a Community Partner Room, a shared space for community agencies to come together and eliminate obstacles for families accessing their services in immigration resources, child care, transitional assistance, and women’s empowerment. Two years later in 2019, Cape Cod Children’s Place joined the Homeless Prevention Council and Community Development Program to form an interagency alliance to further serve families. In addition, Cape Cod Children’s Place coordinates various family and community engagement resources and an opioid assistance program for towns throughout the Cape and Islands. Cindy also serves on boards focused on healthy families and is on the Board of Directors of Katelyn’s Closet and is a member of the Advisory Boards for the Department of Children and Families and the Department of Transitional Assistance. Her community work involves parent education in the Barnstable House of Correction, presentations for the Fatherhood and Motherhood Programs through the Barnstable County Probation Department, and workshop facilitation with local shelters serving children and families.

“Cindy dedicates her career to raising awareness about the need to support families in our community,” said Bob Rivers, Chair and CEO of Eastern Bank. “Through a model of community engagement, she and her team create sustainable, healthy solutions for families across Cape Cod, and we are honored to recognize her leadership.”

This celebration of Eastern's Community Advocacy Award coincides with the Bank's focus on enriching early childhood development in its philanthropy and advocacy, and is part of Eastern’s broader strategy to address income inequality and workforce issues by supporting efforts that assist parents and caregivers and prepare children to be ready to learn and succeed. The Community Advocacy Award celebrates local community leaders who give their time and talent to address vital needs throughout Eastern’s New England footprint.

“To address the great needs of families in our community, be bold and do good,” commented Cindy Horgan. “I am grateful each day to make this world a better place, and thank Eastern Bank for this recognition.”
