Eastern Bank honors Jay McManus with 2017 Community Advocacy Award

PEABODY, November 9, 2017 – Eastern Bank recently honored Jay McManus with the bank’s 2017 Community Advocacy Award, which recognizes people who have given their time and talent to address a vital need in their community.

McManus, Executive Director of the Children’s Law Center of Massachusetts, was recognized for dedicating his professional career to advocating for the rights of children, particularly immigrant minors, in the Bay State.

Prior to joining the Children’s Law Center in 1999, McManus worked as staff counsel to the state’s Department of Children & Families.  From 1991 to 2007, he directed the Massachusetts chapter of the Irish Political Prisoners Children’s Holiday “Because of the Children Program,” a nonprofit that offered relief to children who were impacted by the political imprisonment of family members in Northern Ireland.  Before his legal career, McManus was already advocating for the welfare of children by counseling youth patients with disabilities, juvenile offenders, and was a foster parent.

Children’s Law Center provides statewide assistance with legal matters that impact children, at no cost.  Its helpline receives nearly 1,500 calls each year from parents, youth, attorneys, and other concerned professionals that are seeking advice and information to help support children who are affected by a myriad of issues, including immigration, emancipation, foster care, and juvenile court involvement, among others.

The 2017 Community Advocacy Award is decided by a select group of Eastern Bank executives.  The award aligns with Eastern’s Targeted Grant program each year, which for 2017 the focus is supporting immigrants in our communities.
