We recognize we are only as strong as the communities we serve. That’s why for more than a quarter-century, Eastern Bank Foundation has been committed to helping our neighbors prosper through philanthropy, volunteerism, advocacy, and collaboration with other businesses and community partners.
Now, as one of our region's largest foundations, we have the resources to continue the support we have always shared with our communities at the grassroots level in more than 1,000 grants each year. And we are listening to community leaders and building on key learnings to address the most challenging and pressing issues of our time, particularly around economic inclusion and mobility. We are focused on areas where the combination of our philanthropy, volunteerism and advocacy can have the greatest impact.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been there to offer our help and support during these difficult times. Our $15 million in COVID-19 relief efforts has supported over 700 community-based organizations and offered aid to immigrants, the elderly, victims of domestic violence, mental health services, community health centers, food banks and pantries, community foundations, early childhood education and care providers, safe and affordable housing providers, culturally competent vaccination outreach and access, and organizations assisting businesses of color.
And even a pandemic could not stop our employees from giving back. In 2020 and again this year, they found new ways to make a difference through socially distanced and remote volunteer activities, and collectively volunteered thousands of hours in the midst of the pandemic.
